Juliette Bessette is a contemporary art historian, lecturer at the University of Lausanne, and research associate at the Center for Research on the Arts and Language (CRAL, EHESS/CNRS). Her work, situated at the intersection of visual studies and environmental humanities, focuses on scientific and technical imaginaries as expressed through the arts.
Elle est l'auteure de Pop Écologie (forthcoming in 2026, INHA/CTHS), a book that offers a reinterpretation of Pop Art through the lens of its connection to environmental thought between 1950 and 1970. Her current research focuses on representations of the ocean and underwater environments from the early 20th century to the present, particularly in relation to practices in marine ecology. Together with Margaret Cohen, a researcher in the blue humanities, she co-leads the “Towards a Blue Art History” platform (Stanford University). Together with Enguerrand Lascols, she co-curated the exhibition “Reading the Sky: Under the Stars in the Mediterranean” (2025–2026), presented at the Mucem in partnership with the Louvre Museum.
